Felipe Cruz

Principal Architect Engineer

From zero to production — product, platform, teams and scale.

I build and scale complex systems in production — from healthcare to data platforms, AI and devices at scale.

Expertise

What I solve

Systems Architecture

Design and scale distributed systems, microservices and high-availability platforms from zero to production.

Complex Problem Solving

Understand the real problem before coding. Break down business challenges into clear, executable technical solutions.

Technical Leadership & Management

Build, structure and lead engineering teams. From 1 to 15+ engineers, with processes, culture and autonomy.

Product & End-to-End Vision

Think from user problem to infrastructure. Work with product, design and business to deliver real impact.

AI & Intelligent Automation

Implement agents, RAG systems, LLMs and AI workflows integrated into the product core.

Data Platforms & Pipelines

Build complete data platforms — ingestion, transformation, warehouse and visualization at scale.

DevOps & Infrastructure

CI/CD, containers, MDM, security, compliance (HIPAA/ISO 27001). From code to deploy.

Operations & Scale

Brazil operation from scratch: office, infra and processes; cross-functional hiring — sourcing, interviews, recruiting and training.

Technical authority

How I think

Principles behind architecture, people and delivery — what you can expect working with me.

AI as the engineering default

AI isn't a sideshow — it's how we specify, review and ship faster without lowering the quality bar.

Systems before features

Domain, load, failure modes and compliance come first. Scaling unclear systems creates fatal debt.

Infra and compliance as product

Observability, security and auditability are designed in — not bolted on after release.

Hire and train for autonomy

I set context and the quality bar, then trust execution. Strong teams don't need micromanagement.

From first line to direction

I still architect and review what matters. Serious technical leadership means shipping with the team — not only slides.

Results

What I deliver

Concrete metrics and scope — not a generic skill list.

  • Patented DMEPOS SaaS in production across 350+ US clinics — DME domain (ordering, eligibility, clinical supply workflows) with HIPAA requirements and ISO 27001-aligned technical and organizational controls engineered into the product and operations.
  • Fleet of 1,000+ clinical iPads and 200+ corporate endpoints: procurement, OEM-to-employee fulfillment and zero-touch enrollment via Windows Autopilot and Apple Business Manager (ADE); policy and compliance through MDM, identity on Microsoft Entra ID, perimeter hardening with WAF and end-to-end security posture.
  • Engineering scale 1 → 15+ ICs; stood up Frontend, Backend and QA as durable practices. SDLC driven by a task system with explicit stages (in progress, in development, review, release), delivery cadence, Definition of Ready/Done, code review and quality gates aligned with product squads and roadmap execution.
  • AI-accelerated delivery on a flagship legacy rewrite: in a few months, replaced a ~7-year-old production system with a leaner, higher-quality codebase; moved the full engineering org onto the new platform and kept shipping with AI-assisted development. On the order of ~500% gain in team productivity, a sharp reduction in bugs and legacy performance issues, and clearing the bulk of technical debt in that same window using leading code-centric models.
  • Greenfield Brazil subsidiary for a US remote-first parent: registered address, physical office, business-grade connectivity, voice and collaboration stack; fit-out, access control and physical security. Full-cycle hiring (sourcing through onboarding) for 70+ roles across functions; ~$6M cumulative efficiency impact and ~95% retention over a ~7-year window.
  • ELT analytics platform: Fivetran → Snowflake → dbt → Apache Superset — ingestion, versioned transformations and a semantic layer; governed self-service analytics. Snowflake-native AI agents / analytical copilot so strategy consumes insights and curated reporting without ad hoc SQL; RAG, LLM orchestration and MCP where they strengthen the product surface.
  • Full-stack observability on Datadog: APM with distributed tracing (correlated spans, latency waterfalls), structured logging, Database Monitoring on critical workloads and infrastructure metrics. Slack-routed alerts with severity and actionable context; triage discipline to drive down MTTR and catch regressions before the first customer ticket.
  • High-concurrency OLTP database optimization at scale: execution-plan analysis, predicate-aligned indexing, materialized views where appropriate, N+1 remediation and disciplined ORM usage. Roughly ~80% reduction in critical-path database round-trip latency and ~90% on target query duration, measured on production traffic using P90 and P99 percentiles.

Education

Academic background

Bachelor's in Philosophy

Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC)

2019 — 2020

Something I'd wanted to do for years — almost a hobby: I already read philosophy on my own; I enrolled to study again inside the university setting. That stretch deepened ethics and metaphysics, working through Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Descartes, Voltaire, Leibniz and the Cynic tradition — among other authors and lines of thought.

Bachelor's in Information Technology

São Paulo State University (UNESP)

2012 — 2016

The natural next step after the technical diploma at university level. I started a few years after finishing the CTI — in between I worked as an intern and freelancer, already in the field. The program stressed less routine language coursework and more how complex systems and project lifecycles work, and how technology maps to real problems — a layer beyond what I already had from technical school.

Technician in Computer Programming

Colégio Técnico Industrial "Prof. Isaac Portal Roldán"

2007 — 2009

My first real dive into programming: a technical program alongside high school. I already knew a bit about it because my brother had taken the same course before I enrolled. At 15 I started training seriously as a programmer — C, Pascal and Delphi — plus the web stack: HTML and JavaScript, which is what I carried forward most in my career.
